Bob possessed a rare ability: pattern recognition. Not the scientific kind — the neighborhood kind. He noticed engines refusing to start the same way three times, train horns arriving at suspiciously important moments, and which stories belonged in the mythology.

Bryan collected horizons — Alaskan fishing boats, Hawaiian lava monitoring, Pacific Northwest fire towers, piloting, unexploded ordnance survey work. Yet every road eventually led back toward the same stories and the same people. Lived next door to Phil. Joined the soccer team.
